European Publishing Award: Tagesspiegel Innovation Lab wins Award

Tagesspiegel Innovation Lab was awarded in the "Data Journalism" category at the European Digital Publishing Awards 2025 for its interactive database on the language of the AfD!

With an increasing number of state parliament members, the AfD has been continuously pushing the boundaries of what can be said in German parliaments for the past ten years. This is shown by an exclusive data analysis of the speeches of all AfD members in German state parliaments since 2014. Based on the data, a language model was developed that uses qualitative methods and topic modeling to identify and analyze xenophobic narratives. The Tagesspiegel Innovation Lab has fully evaluated all these parliamentary speeches, totaling 340,000 paragraphs and over 15 million words. Using language models, it was partially automated to detect where and in what context xenophobic content is propagated in speeches.
